VWS Oil & Gas has recently launched its Streamliner range of deoiling hydrocyclones, a new class of produced-water treatment with design improvements that promise gains in reliability, performance, and efficiency.
Deoiling hydrocyclones have been used for years to separate free oil from produced water prior to discharge or reinjection and are typically considered the first stage of the treatment process. As produced water enters a hydrocyclone under pressure, it is forced into a rotational vortex pattern. Because the hydrocyclone liner has a conical shape which narrows its diameter from the inlet to outlet, the fluid’s rotational speed increases, setting up high centrifugal forces that separate oil from the heavier oil and solids.
Deoiling hydrocyclones have been commonly employed in produced water treatment scenarios, due in part to their efficiency at high throughput. A hydrocyclone can take an inlet oil content of 1000 mg/L down to typical outlet concentrations of 40-60 mg/L, according to VWS Oil & Gas. Deoiling hydrocyclones also provide compact and rapid treatment, with produced-water retention times on the order of a few seconds.
Common disadvantages of deoiling hydrocyclones include a sensitivity to process fluctuations, which could impact separation efficiency, and the need for an elevated inlet pressure to achieve a sufficient vortex. In addition, some designs are difficult to clean or refurbish, which may force the operator to buy an expensive replacement.
By contrast, the Streamliner design makes the unit easier to clean and service; in the event that a part needs replacement, service work can be done in the field, saving time and money.
Other Streamliner benefits include:
- Annular axial inlets, which reduce turbulence
- Multiple inlets for improved wear resistance
- A swirl inducer that can be inspected without disassembling the liner
- A retractable swirl inducer which allows for internal liner inspection and easier jet cleaning
- Liners that can be retrofitted into existing installations
VWS states that their new deoiling hydrocyclone is supported by industry water-treatment specialists located throughout the world and who are ready to provide whole-life care for the technology.
More information on the Streamliner can be found at the VWS Oil&Gas website.
