The meter employs ultrasonic sensors which utilize the principle of Doppler shift for velocity measurements. An average velocity is calculated, which the meter then multiplies by the physical dimensions of the flow cell to determine a volumetric flow rate. Molecular weight and mass flow rate can also be calculated, using the pressure and temperature measurements obtained from the meter.
The meter can be used on any rig, onshore or off, and because it has no moving parts, can tolerate dirty or wet conditions without creating obstructions in the flare line. The meter includes a flow cell that is installed in the flare line, a flow computer with integrated wellsite-information transfer-specification (WITS) translator, and a protective housing.
MI-SWACO states that this new meter gives operators the ability to conclusively locate productive gas zones while in a UBD mode without having to rely solely on log data to predict production and make drilling decisions. The CarbonTracker promises operators a lower cost technology that improves the accuracy and cost-effectiveness of their decisions, in real time.
