US Sensor Systems recently unveiled a new fiber optic-based sensor technology designed to provide more precise subsurface imaging for more efficient oil extraction. The small, highly reliable fiber optic geophone reportedly represents the first major technological advancement over traditional magnetic coil geophones in almost 50 years.
The patent-pending sensor is an all-optical, omni-directional geophone that requires no in-situ electronics, copper conductors, or electrical power. A fiber optic telemetry cable provides the data path from the geophones to a fully self-contained optical interrogation unit. This unit, which can connect with up to 128 individual geophones, contains all the receiver electronics that demodulate the optical signals from the geophones and translate them into digital electronic signals. Multiple interrogation units can be mounted in a modular fashion in an equipment rack to increase the number of sensors being monitored.
As a result, the sensor system can provide a much clearer picture of untapped underground oil or gas, and is ideally suited for the demanding performance requirements of permanent 4D seismic monitoring.
“The sensor is being evaluated by one of the world’s largest oil companies for a downhole monitoring application,” said Jim Andersen, chief executive officer of US Sensor Systems. “However, the sensor can also be used for surface seismic—on land—or marine seismic.” Andersen envisions this new sensor technology as enabling producers to extract more oil from existing reservoirs by providing repeatable, higher resolution images of their oil and gas fields.
Many experts agree that higher resolution subsurface imaging is critical to meet the world’s growing demand for energy. “For over 10 years, the US Department of Energy, every major oil company, and all of the oilfield service companies have been looking for a small, reliable, low-cost sensing system for permanent surface and downhole monitoring applications,” said Björn Paulsson, geophysicists and chief executive officer of Paulsson, Inc. “This sensor appears to be the best solution I have seen.”
