Engineering specialist Caledyne is expanding its gas well deliquification offering with its new Balance pump, designed to transform operations and offer a new lease on life to mature gas wells.
The phenomenon of liquid loading of gas wells, in which the build-up of water or condensate at the bottom of a well hinders or eventually stops gas production, is a well-known occurrence, particularly in mature reservoirs where the natural flowing gas pressure declines over time, contributing to the collection of liquid droplets in the wellbore.
The most common method of dewatering is foam injection, particularly in the mainland US. Foamers are generally effective but become unsuitable for the most mature wells, as the technology requires a certain amount of well energy to operate successfully.
A surface-driven downhole pump, on the other hand, does not require well pressure. Thus, it can provide a longer-term and end-stage deliquification method for operators, avoiding costly intervention prior to well abandonment.
This fact was the driving force behind the development of the Balance pump, a hydraulically actuated reciprocating, low-volume pump that can be used to remove liquid from onshore and offshore gas wells as part of a deliquification offering. The pump, which can be retrofitted, is operated by two hydraulic lines—one filled with oil, the other with water.
