Oil and gas companies participating in the 2009 Offshore Europe Conference and Exhibition continue to take advantage of the venue to launch new technologies or make important announcements. Among the news coming from the exhibit floor on Wednesday and Thursday:
SenTURIAN
Schlumberger released its new SenTURIAN subsea landing string electrohydraulic operating system. Technological advances have resulted in the development of an innovative, shorter modular system, the company says, which allows safe, reliable, and efficient completion installation, well cleanup, and well testing from a dynamically positioned vessel in water depths of up to 15,000 ft.
SenTURIAN is the world’s first and only in-riser system designed and certified in accordance with the International Electrotechnical Commission’s IEC 61508 SIL 2 reliability specifications for safety-related systems, the service company said. “The short and compact system is easy to handle and to operate, which saves rig time,” said Shehryar Lodhi, marketing manager of Schlumberger Testing Services. “It delivers reliable verification of equipment integrity and well control with state-of-the-art circuitry and accumulator technology.”
The technology can be used across the life of the field for reservoir testing during exploration appraisal; for completion installation during development; and for intervention during the production phase. So far, the technology has been used in 23 wells in India over the past 17 months, and is now being used in the US Gulf of Mexico in high-pressure environments.
The technology is the first landing string system to use interchangeable mandrels and pressure-balanced accumulators. This allows both subsea control and accumulator modules to be combined in a single assembly, which is 50% shorter than other systems while providing the tensile strength, pressure rating, and hydraulic output needed for operations in shallow to ultra deepwater.
New Expro Award
Expro announced that is has been awarded a multimillion-dollar contract by Apache North Sea in the UK North Sea after a completion of a competitive tender process. The contract mainly covers work on the Forties field. Expro will provide wireline services and establish an alliance with another leading provider to deliver coiled tubing and pumping services for Apache, one of the key independents operating in the region. The contract has a duration of 3 years with two optional 1-year extensions.
New Drilling for Mobil North Sea
Mobil North Sea, an ExxonMobil subsidiary, announced that it will begin drilling again in the Beryl field in the northern North Sea. Mobil North Sea is the field’s operator; co-venturers are Hess, Enterprise Oil, and OMV.
The initial drilling program will involve three wells drilled from the Beryl Alpha platform. The additional production from the new wells is expected to help offset the decline from existing production wells, the company said. The Beryl area fields achieved total cumulative production of 1 billion barrels of oil and condensate in 2009, 33 years after production commenced.
Subsea Grouted Tee
Subsea 7, the subsea engineering and construction company, announced that after a 3-year development, testing, and qualification program, its new Subsea Grouted Tee has successfully completed offshore trials in the North Sea, demonstrating the technology’s deepwater, diverless potential.
The offshore trials involved the mobilization of a subsea grout mixing and injection unit, complete with test tee assemblies, on Subsea 7’s Seven Pelican dive support vessel. The skid-mounted mixing unit was developed to enhance diver-based hot tapping operations, and also to allow the technology to be used in deep water.
Profiler
Tracerco is displaying its Profiler technology, which it says has revolutionized separator measurement and control. About 300 Profilers have been sold for projects throughout the world since the product was designed. Originally intended for topsides operations, it has since been deployed in deepwater seabed processing, on floating production units, at onshore refineries in high-temperature desalter vessels, onshore in the oil sands in Canada, and in LNG/gas plants. Its biggest market is the Norwegian North Sea, said Graham Barker, the firm’s technical manager. This instrument measures accurately in real time and high resolution the vertical distribution of all phases within a separator.
Tracerco also announced the opening of a new service center in Bergen, Norway. In the past year, the company has opened new operational facilities in Abu Dhabi, Kuala Lumpur, Perth, and Shanghai.
