Siem WIS, a managed pressure drilling (MPD) technology provider based in Norway, recently entered into a contract with StatoilHydro for the development and qualification of the Siem WIS Pressure Control Device (PCD). The contract was awarded as a result of a successful preengineering and final qualification of Siem WIS’ Riser Pressure Control Device (RPCD).
Siem WIS has a patent pending for the PCD, which is a technology designed to seal the annular space outside of a rotating drillpipe for both onshore and offshore applications. The company lists several benefits of their PCD, including:
Improved safety and efficiency
Working pressures ranging from 500 to 5,000 psi
Full bore opening with retrieved seals
No bearings or rotating parts
Easy, fail safe, remote and quick seal replacement
Long seal life due to special system solution
Excellent gas sealing capabilities and control options
Seal inserts configure for all drillpipe sizes and coiled tubing
Wireline adaptor solution available
The contract with StatoilHydro covers a trial of the PCD technology at the Ullrigg Drilling and Well Center in Stavanger during Q4 2009. The PCD technology is the platform application of the RPCD and will be a part of the ongoing RPCD development contract with StatoilHydro, Siem WIS states.
The PCD will be ready for a final field operation execution, subsequent to the qualification at Ullrigg, and will be aimed at the fixed platform and land market. The company states that the increased operational reliability of the PCD will make it a serious competitor against traditional rotation control heads which have been part of the global MPD business for nearly 30 years.
MPD and recent drilling techniques seek to establish a closed loop for the drilling fluid, providing better drilling performance. In addition, a closed-loop system provides increased drilling quality with reduced risk, both with respect to the reservoir as well as emissions to the environment.
Depleted (infield) and high temperature/high pressure (HPHT) reservoirs particularly benefit from the closed-loop drilling technology, in terms of increased recovery and drillability.
Per Espen Edvardsen, chief executive officer of Siem WIS said, “Siem WIS is pleased to enter into a third technology development cooperation contract with StatoilHydro. The contract is an important step for the further development of the PCD concept and for the acceptance of the technology by the drilling industry.”
